The Future of Associations: A Global Perspective

In the past, associations have often been limited by geographic boundaries, with members and stakeholders located in the same area. However, the digital world has broken down these boundaries, allowing 501(c)6 associations to reach a global audience.

One way that 501(c)6 associations are using the digital world to overcome geographic boundaries is through online membership. In the past, members of the associations typically had to live in the same area as the organization's headquarters. However, with online membership, anyone in the world can join an association. This allows the associations to build a larger and more diverse membership base.

Another way that 501(c)6 associations are using the digital world to overcome geographic boundaries is through online education. In the past, associations had to rely on local or regional in-person learning, and with the technological capabilities that has become a global market with options for in-person, hybrid, and/or digital learning. Programs and services can now be offered to people all over the world and associations can now offer their online courses to members/students anywhere in the world.

The digital world is opening up new possibilities for associations to reach a global audience and make a global impact. The removal of geographic boundaries for 501(c)6 associations has a number of benefits, including:

  • Increased membership: associations can now reach a global audience and build a larger and more diverse membership base.

  • Increased advocacy: associations can leverage an increased member base for a more influential voice in advocacy efforts at the state or federal level.

  • Increased impact: associations can now provide their educational programs and services to people all over the country or world, making it possible to have a global impact.

While the removal of geographic boundaries has a number of benefits, it also presents some challenges, including:

  • Cultural differences: associations must be aware of and respectful of cultural differences when providing programs and services to a national or global audience.

  • Governance barriers: associations must have boards that understand this changing landscape and be willing to reconsider how their governance is designed and structured.

  • Technological challenges: associations must have the necessary technology and infrastructure to support their global operations.

The digital landscape is erasing geographical barriers for 501(c)6 organizations, enabling them to expand their membership base, diversify their revenue streams, and amplify their reach and impact. However, as they venture into this broader arena, associations must be mindful of the challenges that accompany operating on a larger scale.
