Springwell and BayPath Announce Merger

Local non-profits providing services to thousands of older adults, caregivers, and those with chronic health conditions to combine efforts and service areas under one organization.

Waltham, MA — Springwell, Inc, and BayPath Elder Services, Inc announced to key stakeholders this spring that their boards of directors approved the merger of the organizations, which will be complete on July 1, 2022. Springwell, a 45-year old, Waltham-based nonprofit, and BayPath, a 45-year old, Marlborough-based nonprofit, are independent organizations that both hold contracts with the Executive Office of Elder Affairs to act as state-designated Aging Service Access Points and federally-designated Area Agencies on Aging. Springwell provides these services to residents of the towns of Belmont, Brookline, Needham, Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, and Weston. BayPath provides these services to residents of the towns of Ashland, Dover, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Hudson, Marlborough, Natick, Northborough, Sherborn, Southborough, Sudbury, Wayland, Westborough. The new organization resulting from the proposed merger will be called Springwell, and will continue to provide all contracted services to residents in all twenty-two communities.

While both organizations are strong programmatically and financially, combining operations will provide opportunities for more efficient and flexible service delivery and a larger organizational footprint for staff and volunteer recruitment. It will also create a more robust organization, big enough to take advantage of opportunities not possible for either of the two smaller nonprofits. According to Trish Smith, CEO of Springwell, “It makes sense for both Springwell and BayPath to merge for sustainability reasons. As a combined organization, we'll be able to expand our services and create new programming that meets the needs of both areas."

Both organizations share very similar missions to provide quality resources and services to individuals across the lifespan, empowering them to remain in the setting of their choice while they face the challenges that come with aging, caregiving, and/or living with chronic health issues. Philosophically, the organizations are well-positioned for a merger at this time, and, plan to maintain both offices and staff in both locations. Springwell’s Chief Executive Officer, Trish Smith, will head the new organization, and Joe Quirk, BayPath’s CEO will remain on the organization’s senior leadership team as the Chief Strategy and Integration Officer.
